Workplace Accident Statistics

Even though the vast majority of workplaces are risk-free, a few are particularly so. Workers in the construction, manufacturing, agriculture and transportation sectors face a higher risk of injury.

According to the federal government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, there are over 4,000 deaths and serious injuries at work every year.

In November 2020, more than two-thirds of American workers were injured on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since 2018, there has been no change in this figure.

Workplace deaths have remained high despite a decline in workers’ compensation claims. 2018 saw a 2 percent increase to 5,333 in the number of people killed in workplace accidents. Since 2010, the death toll has been steadily increasing.

The number of workplace deaths rose by 2% this year. A total of 5,333 people lost their lives in car accidents in 2019. Accidents involving slipping, tripping, and falling accounted for 16.5 percent of all fatalities. 39.8% of those who died were killed in automobile accidents.

The most common causes of death at work are motor vehicle collisions, objects falling or moving, and homicidal accidents. Slips and trips, as well as overexertion from lifting and moving heavy objects, are the leading causes of non-fatal workplace injuries.
