[07-12-2025] Los Angeles County, CA โ€“ Man Killed in Dog Attack at Friendโ€™s Home in Lancaster

A man was fatally mauled by several dogs in the backyard of a home near 22nd Street East and Lancaster Boulevard in Lancaster on Saturday night, July 12, 2025.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriffโ€™s Department, the victim did not live at the home but was acquainted with the homeowners.

Authorities say the incident occurred when the man went into the backyard looking for tools to help a friend fix a car.

While in the backyard, a puppy began barking, which provoked the adult dogs to attack the man. Despite efforts by the dog owner to intervene, the man was fatally injured in the mauling. Investigators have labeled the incident a tragic accident, not a criminal act.

A sheriffโ€™s deputy shot one of the dogs at the scene. The injured dog survived and is recovering at the Palmdale Animal Shelter. In total, four large dogs, identified as Mastiffs or Mastiff mixes, were secured by animal control, though it remains unclear if all four participated in the attack.

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control also removed a total of 19 dogs from the property, including the Mastiffs, a terrier, and approximately 14 puppies. The animals are being held under quarantine while the investigation continues.

During the response, a woman at the residence was arrested for child neglect, and a small child was removed from the home.

The identity of the man killed has not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing.

Steps To Take After A Fatal Dog Attack

Losing a loved one in a dog attack is a deeply traumatic experience. The aftermath can be filled with grief, uncertainty, and urgent responsibilities. While every situation is different, the steps below may help families take appropriate action and protect their rights.

  1. Request The Official Incident Report
Law enforcement agencies, such as the Los Angeles County Sheriffโ€™s Department, typically prepare a detailed report following a fatal animal attack. This report may include witness accounts, animal descriptions, and the agencyโ€™s initial findings. You can contact the agency to learn how to request a copy.
  2. Contact The County Animal Control Department
The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control may also issue records related to the animals involved, quarantine procedures, and any prior incidents. These documents may be helpful for understanding what occurred and whether any safety issues were previously known.
  3. Preserve Any Available Information
If there are photographs, video, news coverage, or personal notes related to the incident, try to organize and store them securely. These details may become important later if legal action is considered.
  4. Keep A Record Of Related Expenses
Families may face unexpected costs such as funeral services, transportation, and other out-of-pocket expenses. Saving receipts and tracking these costs may help clarify the financial impact and support a possible claim.
  5. Use Caution When Communicating With Insurance Companies
You may be contacted by the dog ownerโ€™s insurance provider. You are not required to accept any settlement offers or provide statements before speaking with legal counsel. It is okay to take time before making decisions.
  6. Speak With A Dog Bite Lawyer
A lawyer can help review the facts of the case and explain whether legal action may be appropriate. Legal guidance may assist with identifying responsible parties, preserving evidence, and determining if compensation may be available for the familyโ€™s loss.
