Steps To Take After A Fatal DUI Crash

A fatal crash involving suspected impairment can leave families with sudden responsibilities and very few answers. While each situation is different, taking certain steps early on may help protect important information and support the process ahead.

  1. Request The Police Report
Law enforcement typically prepares a report following a crash involving serious injuries or loss of life. This document may include preliminary findings and other key details. You can contact the investigating agency to learn how to request a copy.
  2. Gather Medical And Funeral Documentation
Keep a record of any hospital bills, coroner reports, or funeral-related expenses. This information may be useful later, especially when trying to understand the impact of the incident.
  3. Save Evidence And Records
Preserve any photos, witness details, or communication related to the crash. Even small pieces of information can help provide clarity over time.
  4. Limit Communication With Insurance Companies
Before responding to questions or settlement offers, consider speaking with a lawyer. You are not required to make immediate decisions, and consulting with legal counsel first may help protect your rights.
  5. Speak With A DUI Accident Lawyer
Legal guidance may help you understand what steps to take based on the specific facts of the case. A lawyer can provide information, review available records, and assist you in navigating the next steps.
