Three people were injured after an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train struck on-track maintenance tools in Alameda County late Friday morning, July 15, 2022.
The crash occurred late Friday morning in Oakland.
According to local news, train No. 531 headed for San Jose struck a front-load tractor owned by Union Pacific that was operating in the middle of three tracks.
The driver suffered serious injuries and had to be pulled from the car’s wreckage before being taken to the hospital.
According to an Oakland Fire Department spokesman, a third person suffered minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital. At the same time, local news reports that another train passenger was hurt as well.
A fuel spill from the collision, estimated to be more than 100 gallons, required the assistance of fire department hazmat crews, but eventually, a railroad crew took over the cleanup.
After the accident, the tracks between Oakland and San Jose did not reopen for more than 9 hours.
The National Transportation Safety Board and state Division of Occupational Safety and Health are still investigating the accident.
