According to California Highway Patrol, 2 were injured following a multiple car crash after a high-speed chase on Saturday, July 16, 2022.
According to authorities, the chase began around 8 a.m. Saturday, when a Sonora-area CHP officer based in Jamestown received word from Merced dispatch that a recently stolen Ford F-350 pickup truck was seen driving west on Highway 108 near Long Barn, according to a CHP spokesman.
According to the CHP, the driver of the stolen pickup, Joshua Micha Kohl, 49, of La Mesa in San Diego County, immediately accelerated and drove across double yellow lines to pass another vehicle in front of him.
Kohl crossed the double yellow lines again to pass another vehicle in front of him in a leftward curve just east of Coffill Road in the Confidence area when he collided with an eastbound 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Leroy Keller, 86, of Sonora, with his wife, Earlene Keller, 80, as his passenger, according to the CHP.
The stolen pickup then collided with a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic driven by Diana Barreno, 59, of Twain Harte, before colliding with an embankment and a 2018 Subaru Outback driven by Charles Hester, 59, of San Mateo.
According to the CHP, the Kellers suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to Doctors Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Leroy Keller was in surgery as of midday Monday, and Earlene Keller was treated, released, and waiting in Modesto while her husband was in surgery, according to their daughter, Lori Underwood of Soulsbyville, in a phone interview.
There was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.
FATAL MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH STATISTICS
There are far too many car accidents in the United States. The annual death toll from traffic accidents is approximately 33,654.
Los Angeles is a densely populated city with numerous potential locations for car accidents. The 405, 101, 10, and 5 are frequently congested on your way to work or school, and there are numerous opportunities for rear-end collisions.
At the end of 2016, there were 55,350 accidents on Los Angeles’ roads. This represents a roughly 20% increase over the previous year. According to the Los Angeles Times, at least one person is killed in a car accident every 40 hours.
When multiple vehicles are involved in a single accident, it is considered to have occurred. When two or more cars collide, incidents like this occur. Three cars are likely to be struck when two cars collide.
These collisions were caused by a number of things, including risky actions like speeding, driving while intoxicated, driving while distracted, driving in poor weather, driving the wrong way, and breaking traffic laws.
When you hit the brakes in a collision involving multiple vehicles, take care to steer away from the other vehicles and toward something soft, like a bush or a railing. Watch out for anyone who might be stumbling around after an accident as well.
