Two-Vehicle Crash Statistics

Accidents involving vehicles can happen at any time, anywhere. One car accident occurs in the United States every sixty seconds. Accidents are inevitable, with hundreds of thousands of drivers on the road every day.

In the United States, car accidents are the leading cause of injury. There are nearly 2 million car accident injuries each year. According to the United States Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 33,654 fatal car accidents led to 36,560 deaths last year.

One of the state’s most infamous features is its notoriously congested highway system. Having so many vehicles on the road means that congestion, gridlock, and (most importantly) fatal and serious injury accidents are inevitable.

Nearly a tenth of all fatal car accidents in the state occur here. California had 485,866 traffic accidents in 2017, resulting in 3,898 deaths and 276,823 injuries. The death toll from traffic accidents has risen by 23.5% in California since 2013.

There are numerous possible causes of a car accident. Inclement weather, for example, is out of our hands, but the vast majority of accidents are caused by human error or carelessness on the part of drivers.

During the night, there is less visibility, a higher likelihood of alcohol impairment, and driver fatigue because of the body’s natural sleep cycle.
