PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Pedestrians are more vulnerable to road hazards than those who drive their vehicles. Unlike those in automobiles, pedestrians are not protected by airbags or seatbelts.

In recent years, pedestrian deaths in the United States have increased dramatically. Between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian deaths increased by 27%, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%.

Every year, many pedestrians are injured in accidents in California, and a few people are killed. The most common causes of pedestrian accidents are distracted, speeding, drunk, or irresponsible drivers. This includes breaking traffic laws and driving in the opposite direction.

These collisions are primarily the result of the driver’s negligence. When drivers are intoxicated, pedestrians do not have the right of way.

Other factors can also contribute to pedestrian injury accidents. Pedestrians wearing dark colors at night are more difficult to see. Weather and other hazards can also impair a driver’s ability to see a pedestrian.
