Steps To Take After A Fatal DUI Accident

Losing someone in a DUI crash is a tragic and life-altering experience. During such a time, it may be difficult to know what to do next. While every situation is different, taking certain steps early can help protect your rights, preserve key information, and support any decisions you may need to make moving forward.

  1. Request A Copy Of The Police Report
Law enforcement agencies usually prepare an official report detailing the circumstances of the crash. This document may include statements from witnesses, accident diagrams, and findings from the initial investigation. You can contact the agency that responded to ask how to request a copy.
  2. Seek Information From The Medical Examiner
If a fatality was involved, the coroner or medical examiner may provide a report with findings on the cause of death. This information can be important if questions arise about how the crash occurred.
  3. Preserve Any Available Evidence
Photos of the scene, surveillance footage, damaged personal belongings, or clothing may serve as useful evidence. If available, keep records of communications with witnesses or first responders. Organizing and safely storing these items may help with future decisions.
  4. Track Expenses And Losses
If there were funeral costs, hospital bills, or other expenses related to the crash, it may help to organize this information early. Keeping receipts and invoices in one place can help provide a clear picture of the financial impact.
  5. Avoid Making Statements Without Legal Guidance
Insurance companies or others may reach out after the incident. You are not required to make decisions or provide recorded statements right away. Itโ€™s okay to take time to process the situation and seek legal advice before responding.
  6. Speak With DUI Accident Victim Lawyers
A lawyer can help review the details of the crash and explain what options may be available. This includes guidance on preserving evidence, understanding your rights, and determining whether a civil claim may apply in your situation.
