Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

A pedestrian is a person traveling by foot. Pedestrians are more vulnerable to accidents than other types of travelers because they often cross roads and open spaces and don’t have the protection that cars do when they’re on the road.

According to a new report, the number of pedestrian deaths in California increased by nearly 2% between June 2020 and 2021. 470 pedestrian deaths were reported in California in 2021, compared to 463 in 2020 and 460 in 2019. The rise indicates a general trend in the United States. In the first six months of the past three years, the number of people killed while walking in the United States has risen significantly.

Pedestrians should obey the rules of the road and be aware of their surroundings at all times. If you see an obstacle that could threaten a pedestrian, such as a pothole or uneven sidewalk, flag down a passing vehicle and get help as soon as possible.

If you have to cross a street, make sure you use crosswalks and pay attention to traffic signals, so you don’t get hit by a car. Try not to walk alone at night or while drunk, especially in areas with high traffic volumes and fewer people around.

At the same time, drivers should not think about how quickly they can get somewhere or do something. They should ask, “How can I get there safely and ensure everyone is safe?”
