Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Scooters have grown increasingly popular in Los Angeles, and this will likely continue. However, as scooters have become more popular, so has the frequency of accidents involving them.

According to UCLA researchers, over 250 patients were treated at two Westside emergency rooms for motorcycle-related injuries between September 2017 and August 2018. Almost 92 percent were riders, with just over 8 percent being non-riders hit by scooters.

According to data from the Los Angeles Fire Department, emergency personnel recorded 167 motorcycle injuries in the city of Los Angeles during the first eight months of 2019.

Motorcycle riders occupy a distinct position on the road. They enjoy the freedoms that come with their mode of transportation but are also vulnerable to dangers that vehicle drivers and other motorists are not. For example, the lack of any significant protective barriers between a motorcycle and the road and the difficulty that other motorists may have to anticipate and see a motorcycle leaves riders vulnerable to serious injury in the event of an accident.

Therefore, motorcycle riders need to know their legal rights and options if they get into an accident. Your state’s insurance laws may be very different for motorcycles than for cars.
