Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Recently, there has been a significant increase in pedestrian fatalities and injuries across the United States. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), while there was a 14% decrease in overall traffic-related deaths from 2007 to 2016, pedestrian fatalities experienced a substantial rise of 27% during the same period.
In 2016 alone, the country witnessed a shocking 5,977 pedestrian deaths, resulting in an average of approximately 88 daily fatalities. Additionally, hospitals reported a total of 137,000 pedestrian injuries in 2017. California, in particular, faced a troubling number of pedestrian fatalities, recording 893 deaths and over 14,000 injuries in 2012.
Studies indicate that California surpasses other states regarding pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries. The primary causes of most pedestrian accidents involve vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians or making abrupt stops. If you seek legal advice, consulting with a specialized attorney experienced in handling such cases is advisable.
