Truck Accident Statistics
The number of large trucks on American roads has steadily increased over the last three decades, as has the number of accidents and injuries caused by trucks. According to data from the US Department of Transportation, one person is injured or killed in a large truck accident every 16 minutes.
4,014 people will be killed by large trucks in 2020. A total of 15% of these deaths occurred among truck occupants, while 68% occurred among the occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles. There were 28% more people killed in large truck accidents in 2020 than in 2009 when the number of fatalities was at its lowest since fatal crash data collection began in 1975.
In many truck accidents, the severity of injuries and fatalities is directly related to the enormous size of the commercial trucks. The typical passenger vehicle weighs only 3,000 pounds, whereas a semi-truck or commercial vehicle can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. It’s easy to see why truck crash victims often suffer catastrophic injuries or even death because of the truck’s enormous size.
