[07-28-2023] Sierra County, CA – Three People Injured After Head-On Collision on Highway 89 at Calpine Summit

Three people were injured after a head-on collision involving two vehicles in Calpine Summit, Sierra County, on Friday afternoon, July 28, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred on Highway 89 at the Calpine Summit around 2:18 p.m.

An 80-year-old man named James S. from Los Gatos drove a Toyota 4-Runner in the northbound lane. For unknown reasons, he crossed the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Ford F-350 carrying Ian B., 55, and Mark O., 51, from Sacramento.

All three individuals were taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno for medical treatment.

A CHP officer who arrived at the scene mentioned there was no evidence to suggest that the Toyota driver had fallen asleep or that drugs or alcohol were involved.

The officer explained that as the driver approached a curve, he suddenly saw the grill of another vehicle, leading to the collision.

Highway 89 was temporarily closed for approximately 30 minutes and reopened to one-way traffic once debris had been cleared.

The investigation is ongoing.
