Fatal Bicycle Crash Statistics
Instead of driving, many people choose to travel by bicycle when going somewhere nearby. Contrarily, cyclists are more vulnerable to traffic hazards than drivers of motor vehicles.
Bicycles, like other modes of transportation, are subject to the same traffic laws as cars and other trucks. They may ride on the road if there is no bike lane. When bicyclists ride too closely to the road, cars frequently ignore them and occasionally try to pass them even though it is unsafe.
840 cyclists were killed in car accidents in 2016, making up 2% of all traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
2% of all traffic-related deaths in the US are the result of bicycle accidents. The highest annual death toll of cyclists since 1988 was 871 in 2018.
On California’s congested highways, cyclists must contend with several risks. The majority of the time, drivers of passenger cars, commercial trucks, and buses fail to notice cyclists using the designated bike lanes or sharing the road with other vehicles.
