DOG BITE INJURY STATISTICS

Each year, approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur in the United States, and 800,000 of these bites require medical attention. In 2019, the population of the United States was approximately 328.2 million people. That means that a dog bites one out of every 73 people.

They can attack in various ways, such as snarling, biting, or knocking someone to the ground. Dog bite injuries can occur when a dog bites a person. Bite wounds can cause infection, disfigurement, disability, and even death.

In 2019, California had the highest number of dog-bite fatalities, with nine people killed due to such incidents. Thirty-six people were killed in dog attacks, 15 of whom were children and 21 adults.

Children make up the majority of dog bite victims, accounting for half of all victims. The majority of attacks happen when a child is playing with a dog.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all children under the age of 12 have been bitten by a dog. Over half of all dog bites on children occur in the head or neck area.

Section 3342 of the California Civil Code holds dog owners liable for injuries caused by their pets’ bites. If you were attacked by a dog but were not bitten, you will need to prove negligence, just like in any other personal injury case in California.

To avoid being bitten by a dog, people should exercise caution when petting other dogs. While some dogs may still attack unprovoked, the best thing to do is to remain calm and avoid hitting the dog, as this may make them even more aggressive.
