Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycles are less safe than other vehicles due to their lack of stability and less visibility to other drivers. Unlike car passengers, motorcyclists are not protected against injury in an accident.
According to the California Traffic Safety Office, motorcycle fatalities fell 9.4% from 523 in 2018 to 474 in 2019. Motorcyclist deaths caused by not wearing a helmet decreased by 18%, from 34 in 2018 to 28 in 2019.
According to California Highway Patrol data, more than 80% of all motorcycle accidents result in injury or death, which is significantly greater than the average vehicle.
Although the number of major traffic accidents involving motorcycles has been steadily dropping in recent years, the numbers remain concerning.
