BICYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS
Under California law, bicycles are considered vehicles. To avoid collisions, drivers and cyclists must follow the same traffic rules. When they reach a red light, they must stop and continue straight.
Bicycles and other modes of transportation, such as automobiles, are governed by the same rules. They can ride in the street without a designated bike lane. As a result, cyclists who ride too close to vehicles are frequently ignored or passed.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 840 cyclists were killed by automobiles in 2016, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities.
Every year, the majority of fatal bicycle accidents occur in California. Between 2016 and 2018, more than 400 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents in California.
Wearing a helmet, maintaining your tires and brakes, and keeping your body proportionate to the size of your bike are all good bicycle safety practices.
