Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The number of pedestrians killed or badly injured on California’s highways is increasing. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 893 pedestrians were killed on California roads in 2018, a 26% rise over 2014. Over 14,000 pedestrians were hurt in the same year. Pedestrian fatalities increased by 26% between 2014 and 2018. About 7,500 pedestrians died in California between 2009 and 2018.
Some of the main causes of pedestrian accidents include:
Drugs such as alcohol and sleep-inducing pills. Drugs can affect judgment, making crossing the street or operating a vehicle more difficult. An accident could happen if a pedestrian or motorist has too much alcohol intake or has been using drugs.
Failing to yield the right of way. “Right of way” means that a pedestrian or driver has the legal right to go first in a certain location or situation. For example, if a traffic light tells a pedestrian to go to the crosswalk, the driver must wait for the pedestrian to cross the road before driving through the intersection or crosswalk area.
Getting across a road or intersection the wrong way. Even when pedestrians have the right of way, they may cross a road or intersection the wrong way. Someone can cross the street in a place that isn’t a crosswalk (also known as jaywalking). They may also try to cross the street before the light changes or in front of traffic.
Pedestrian accidents can be avoided if motorists are more aware of their surroundings and avoid risky actions such as intoxicated driving. Pedestrians should only cross the roadway at crosswalks. We can help make our roads safer by following these easy safety tips.

Pedestrian accidents produce serious injuries since pedestrians do not have the same protection as those in motor vehicles. Severe injuries are not only physically unpleasant but may also have an emotional and financial impact on victims and families.
If you, your child, or someone you care about was injured while walking down the street, the law permits you to sue the individual who caused your injuries. When a person is found liable for a pedestrian accident, the court often rules that the injured person is entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain, and other costs associated with the accident.
