HIT-AND-RUN STATISTICS
Regarding adhering to road rules, all drivers are expected to be responsible. Both parties are expected to stay at the scene when there is an accident until authorities arrive.
Despite being considered a crime in and of itself, hit-and-run accidents are still common. A hit-and-run driver is involved in 11% of all crashes. Hit-and-run drivers flee the scene for a variety of reasons.
Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of these types of accidents. Distracted drivers were responsible for over 3,400 traffic fatalities in 2016. Teenagers are the most common offenders. Intoxication, legal difficulties, and fear of being caught are common reasons drivers leave the scene; they may also be uninsured and wish to avoid legal processes.
Being involved in any of the aforementioned incidents indicates that the driver did not take their responsibilities seriously enough in the first place. This increases the likelihood that said the driver would be able to flee after causing a car accident. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, consult with a hit-and-run accident lawyer right away.
