FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS
Car accidents frequently result in the death or injury of pedestrians. In contrast to a car accident, where the car acts as a shield, a pedestrian collision has only their body to protect them, which is why the victims are likely to die at the scene or suffer severe injuries or even death.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, California ranked 11th in the nation for pedestrian fatalities in 2018, the most recent year for which data was available. The bad news keeps coming: pedestrian traffic fatalities in the state increased by 12% in the first half of 2019. In an unacceptably high number of cases, a pedestrian versus vehicle collision results in the tragic death of a loved one.
Car drivers owe pedestrians a greater duty of care than pedestrians owe to the law. The driver was at fault whether or not the pedestrian was involved in the accident. As a result, we must drive more cautiously.
