Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Accidents involving pedestrians are frequently fatal and catastrophic. Compared to motorcycle riders and passengers of enclosed vehicles, pedestrians do not have the same level of protection in the event of a deadly collision.
Over half of all traffic fatalities over the past 33 years have been caused by pedestrians. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, between 2007 and 2016, there was a 14% decrease in other types of fatal traffic incidents but a 27% increase in pedestrian deaths.
The majority of fatalities among pedestrians occur in California, the country’s largest state.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims California has a higher fatality rate than the rest of the nation. In California, there were 893 pedestrian fatalities and 14,000 injuries in 2018.
Many of these pedestrian accidents are caused by distracted, speeding, intoxicated, or reckless drivers who sometimes go the wrong way or drive in poor weather conditions.
