Fatal Train Accident Statistics
According to data from the National Safety Council (NSC), there was a 20% increase in railway fatalities in 2021, totaling 893 deaths. This marked the highest number of fatalities since 2007. Similarly, there was a 4% rise in nonfatal injuries compared to the previous year, resulting in 5,781 injuries.
Fatalities occurring at the intersections between highways and railways experienced a 21% surge, and other incidents also went up by 20%, including 617 deaths involving unauthorized individuals on railway tracks. The year also saw 11 fatalities among railway employees and six among train passengers.
The ratio of railway-related deaths to nonfatal injuries and illnesses was approximately 1:6. Notably, about 26% of all deaths occurred at rail crossings. Furthermore, out of the 3,216 reported nonfatal railway occupational injuries and illnesses, 66 were attributed to incidents at highway-rail crossings in the year 2021.
