FATAL BICYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Under California law, bicycles are considered vehicles. Motorists and cyclists must follow the same traffic laws to avoid collisions. They must stop and ride straight when they come to a red light.

The same rules apply to bicycles and other modes of transportation, such as vehicles. They can ride in the street without a designated bike lane. Drivers frequently ignore or attempt to pass cyclists who are riding too close to the road.

In 2016, 840 cyclists were killed by cars, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Every year, California has the highest number of bicycle fatalities. Between 2016 and 2018, more than 400 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents in California.

Wearing a helmet, maintaining your tires and brakes regularly, and keeping your body proportionate to the size of your bike are all effective bicycle safety measures.
