FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Accidents involving motorcycles frequently result in fatalities or serious injuries. Motorcycle collisions are more likely to result in fatalities and permanently debilitating injuries than incidents involving other vehicles. Every day, they must deal with everything from road rash to head and brain injuries.

Motorcycle accidents account for a significant part of all traffic fatalities in the United States despite making up a relatively modest portion of overall vehicle sales. Motorcycle accidents can have serious negative effects on victims’ health and wellbeing even when no one is killed.

The number of motorcycle fatalities had been declining since the early 1980s, but starting in 1998, they began to rise and were stable until 2008.
The most recent data indicates that 5,115 people died and 79,000 people were injured in motorbike accidents in 2019. Barely 3% of US registered cars are motorcycles, and only 0.6 percent of all vehicle miles are driven on motorcycles.

Only 14% of traffic fatalities, 17% of occupant fatalities, and 3% of all injuries were caused by motorcyclists of the 8.6 million motorcycles registered in the US.

By being cautious, wearing the appropriate gear, and avoiding the blind zones of larger cars, many motorcycle accidents can be avoided.
