PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS
The number of fatalities and serious injuries caused by pedestrians on Californian roads is rising. More people walk to get to places like work, school, and stores, as well as for leisure, exercise, and just to be outside. Walking is increasing riskier, despite the fact that it is a healthy, beneficial, and community-building alternative to driving.
An estimated 1.3 million individuals per year pass away in auto accidents. In 2020, there were more than 7,000 pedestrian fatalities as a result of auto accidents, or one every 75 minutes. Pedestrians made up one in every six fatal accident victims.
Accidents involving pedestrians frequently happen near crossings, when automobiles may be inattentive or fail to stop for pedestrians who are walking in the right-of-way. They can also happen when people are wandering alongside a road at night without enough lighting or crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk. Even though these mishaps can occur anywhere, they seem to occur more frequently in cities since there are so many pedestrians sharing the road with cars there.
Building sidewalks, refuge islands, overpasses, underpasses, and obstacles to keep cars and pedestrians away can stop this from happening. Additional lighting, better traffic signal timing, and beacons that alert drivers to stop at crosswalks when pedestrians are present can all be beneficial. How quickly cars travel has an impact on the likelihood and severity of pedestrian accidents. Therefore, reducing vehicle speed can lower the number of pedestrian fatalities.
