Motorcycle Accident Statistics

California is the center of American motorcycle riding. Motorcyclists come from all over the country to ride on the historic roads, beautiful scenery, and pleasant climate. These factors have increased the number of motorcycles registered in California to previously unheard-of levels but have also raised the rate of motorcycle accidents.

Many fantasize about traveling along California’s famed oceanside roads or Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles, but these journeys can be hazardous. Accidents involving motorcycles occur frequently and frequently end in severe injury or death. In fact, motorcyclists are about 26 times more likely to die in a traffic accident than occupants of passenger cars.

California has the most motorcycle registrations of any state with 785,424. 88% of motorcycle accidents result in an injury or death. Over 500 motorcycle fatalities occur in California annually, making it one of the two most dangerous states for such accidents. According to the most recent publicly available data set, there were 474 motorcycle fatalities in California in 2019.

Many factors contribute to the high rate of motorcycle accidents. Motorcycles are much less visible than other vehicles on the road, making them more difficult for drivers to see.

Additionally, motorcycles offer less protection to riders than enclosed vehicles, meaning that injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident are often more severe.

Finally, motorcycles can be more difficult to control than other vehicles, especially in adverse weather conditions. By understanding the risks associated with motorcycle riding, riders can help to minimize the chance of being involved in an accident.
