[08-17-2023] San Bernardino County, CA – DUI Boat Collision in Lake Havasu near Black Meadow Landing Injured Three Passengers

Three people were injured after a boat collision caused by a DUI driver in San Bernardino County on Thursday evening, August 17, 2023.

The Colorado River Station Marine Enforcement Unit and Lake Havasu City Fire Department responded to the accident on Lake Havasu, near Black Meadow Landing, around 6:49 p.m.

As a result of the boat collision with the California shoreline, three passengers aboard the personal vessel were injured. Medical personnel treated the passengers and took them to the Havasu Regional Medical Center.

Three victims were identified as a 57-year-old female, a 21-year-old male, and a 15-year-old male. No names have been provided for them.

It was determined the driver was Michael H., 54, a Corona, California resident. Alcohol was present in his system while operating his vessel during the collision.

A warrant was issued for the suspect’s arrest, and he was taken to the Colorado River Station jail for booking. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is holding him on $30,000 bail, awaiting a court hearing.

Investigations are ongoing.

In 2016, the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways reported that the Northern California region experienced 266 boating accidents, resulting in 150 injuries and 36 fatalities. These accidents accounted for 45% of all statewide accidents, 56% of the total injuries, and 72% of the fatalities.

Compared to last year, there was a 20% increase in accidents, a 35% increase in damages, and a 20% increase in deaths.

Accidents increased in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, Northern Lakes, Northern Coastal Waters, and San Francisco Bay Area. Only Northern Rivers experienced a decrease in accidents between 2015 and 2016.
