[08-18-2022] Shasta County, CA - Fatal Vehicle Crash Results in One Death on Highway 299One person died after a fatal vehicle crash involving a big-rig truck on Highway 299 Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2022.

The accident transpired near the Whiskeytown Visitors Center close to Highway 299.

According to the CHP, the SUV driver turned a corner and crossed a pair of double yellow lines. The big rig was traveling east while the red SUV was driving west.

According to Sgt. Tim H., the big rig’s fuel tank ruptured and caught fire due to the collision between the SUV and the truck.

The SUV lost control and stopped close to the north side of the highway.

Both sides of Highway 299 had fires going. The fire is still burning to the south of the highway, toward JFK Memorial Drive and Whiskeytown Lake, despite crews’ efforts to put it out on the north side of the road.

According to the CHP, the big rig’s driver hasn’t been hurt.
