One person was trapped in the debris, and another two people were injured following a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon, August 19, 2022.
According to Battalion Chief Robert Mercado of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, the four-vehicle accident happened around 4:55 p.m. in the southbound lanes just south of the Milpas Street onramp.
Firefighters had to free one person trapped in the debris and two others with minor injuries from the wreckage.
The accident resulted in a significant back-up of southbound traffic by blocking the freeway’s left- and center-turn lanes.
Both patients were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by American Medical Response ambulance.
There was no information on their names or conditions.
The California Highway Patrol was investigating the collision.
Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
The most common accident involving more than one car is when one car hits the back of another. People usually call it a “multi-car pileup” because the vehicles end up behind each other. Sometimes it’s called a “chain reaction” accident because one car runs into the back of another.
More than 10,000 people have died in car accidents with more than one car since 2014. Most of the time, the drivers involved in these accidents die. Drivers cause just over 7,000 deaths. When more than one car is involved in an accident, the numbers show how dangerous these situations are on roads and highways.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has looked into this and found that almost two million accidents involving multiple vehicles happen yearly. When all the accidents in a year are added up, this is nearly a third of the total. As more cars, trucks, and other vehicles crash into each other, the chance that someone will get hurt or die goes through the roof.
Many things can lead to these accidents, such as drivers being unable to see well in certain driving conditions, roads that are too crowded because of too much traffic, bad road conditions, and other similar things. When there are places where cars can go fast on highways and roads, multiple car accidents happen often. Heavy traffic makes it hard to see when to avoid a crash or an object on the road. If the weather plays a role, these collisions may happen more often. The more people live in a city, the more likely it is that one of these serious problems will happen or be seen.
Santa Barbara County Multi-Vehicle Accident Lawyers
It’s not uncommon for more than one car to crash into each other, and it’s also not unusual for at least one person to die in these terrible accidents. In addition to the deaths and physical injuries, these incidents can leave victims with emotional wounds that can last for years. When people don’t get therapy after being in a crash where multiple cars hit them in quick succession, their mental health can be affected. This can lead to physical and emotional symptoms.
Anyone involved in these crashes should talk to a lawyer about getting the money they need to pay for medical care, therapy, and treatment for injuries, emotional pain, and psychological trauma.
Having a team of lawyers with a lot of experience on your side makes a difference. Insurance companies try hard to deny claims or pay as little as possible. Don’t try to work things out on your own with the insurance company. Someone needs to stand up for you.
