Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian fatalities and injuries have seen a notable increase throughout the United States. According to data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), while the overall number of traffic-related deaths decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, there was a significant 27% uptick in pedestrian fatalities within that same timeframe.

In 2016, the nation documented a total of 5,977 pedestrian fatalities, resulting in an average of approximately 88 deaths daily. Additionally, hospitals reported a combined 137,000 instances of pedestrian injuries in 2017. Noteworthy is that California displayed a substantial number of pedestrian fatalities, registering 893 deaths and over 14,000 injuries in 2012.

Research suggests that California has outpaced other states in terms of both pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries. The primary factors contributing to most pedestrian accidents involve vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians or making sudden stops.
