According to the authorities, a woman was killed in a late night multi-vehicle crash on the 15 freeway in Hesperia, on Sunday, August 21, 2022.
The crash occurred at 12:27 am, South of Bear Valley Road on northbound I-15.
Four or five cars were involved in the crash, and one of them, a Mercedes C300, flipped over and landed in a drainage ditch on the right shoulder.
The accident shut down all lanes of the freeway for about an hour, making it impossible for cars to move.
When firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire arrived, they found that one person had already died.
A woman with head injuries was taken to a local hospital, and two other people got hurt but didn’t need to go to the hospital.
People who saw the crash said that the woman’s family was there soon after. Her name has not been made public yet.
The reason for the crash is still being looked into.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Every year, tens of thousands of people die and millions of people are hurt in car accidents in the United States. Stats from the U.S. show that 36,560 people died in car crashes last year. The Department of Transportation has a system called “Fatality Analysis System” (FARS).
The California Office of Traffic Safety says that 1,989 people died or were hurt in car accidents in Riverside in 2018. This is 130 fewer than the year before.
In 2018, 327 car accidents in the city were caused by drivers going too fast, which is 15% less than in 2017. But this doesn’t mean that drivers should be less careful. Drivers must keep driving safely to avoid getting into traffic accidents that kill people.
A multi-vehicle accident happens when three or more cars crash into each other on the road. When cars hit each other or other moving objects on the road, it can start a “chain reaction” crash.
Less than 10% of accidents each year involve more than one car. Even so, the NHTSA says that they are to blame for a disproportionate number of traffic accidents that end in death.
