[08-24-2023] Glenn County, CA – Tragic Three-Vehicle Collision on Southbound I-5 in Willows Results in One Fatality

A 57-year-old driver died in a three-vehicle collision in Willows on Thursday afternoon, August 24, 2023.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at approximately 2:18 p.m. on the southbound lanes I-5, south of County Road 39.

Authorities reported that the driver of the Volvo, identified as Eric E., 59, brought the vehicle to a halt due to traffic congestion just ahead of their position. Simultaneously, the second vehicle’s driver stopped behind Eaker’s vehicle due to traffic.

Another vehicle, a 2020 Kenworth, was also in motion. However, the driver of the Kenworth, identified as 42-year-old Sarbjit S., failed to notice the stationary traffic ahead of them. Tragically, the second vehicle’s driver succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Officials said the Kenworth driver was transported by air to Enloe Medical Center. On the other hand, the Volvo driver emerged from the incident without any injuries.

The authorities have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors to the crash. The exact cause of the collision is currently under investigation.

Freshly released data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that in 2022, 42,795 fatalities were attributed to vehicle accidents. This demonstrates a slight decrease of 0.3% compared to the 42,939 reported deaths in 2021.

The fatality rate, which stood at 1.37 deaths for every 100 million vehicle miles in 2021, diminished to 1.35 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles in 2022.
