Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were an estimated 5,878 fatal two-vehicle crashes in 2017. Two-vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities. The majority of these collisions occur on rural roads.

The NHTSA also reports that over half of all fatal two-vehicle collisions occur when one vehicle turns left at an intersection or merges into traffic (a “crossroads”). This type of crash is known as a “left turn” collision, accounting for roughly 20 percent of all U.S. traffic fatalities yearly.

To reduce the number of deceased caused by two-vehicle collisions, drivers should be aware of some common causes:

Driving too fast for conditions – Driving too fast increases your risk of hitting another vehicle or being hit yourself by another driver who may not be able to stop in time because they’re going too fast. Drivers should always follow correct speed limits and practice defensive driving techniques like anticipating other vehicles’ moves to avoid collisions before they happen!
