Train Accident Statistics
Train accidents are relatively rare, but when they occur, they often result in serious injuries or even fatalities. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were 2,216 train accidents in the United States in 2018 alone.
One of the most common causes of train accidents is human error, such as a driver falling asleep at the controls or failing to signal a turn properly. Other common causes include mechanical failures, weather conditions, and track defects. In most cases, accidents are caused by a combination of factors, making it difficult to pinpoint a single cause.
When a car approaches a railroad crossing, the driver must slow down and check for oncoming trains. If the car goes too fast, the driver may not have enough time to stop before reaching the tracks.
However, by taking steps to improve safety protocols and procedures, we can help to reduce the number of accidents and make trains a safer mode of transportation.
