Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The country’s pedestrian injury and fatality rate is high. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,388 pedestrians died, and an estimated 60,000 were injured in 2021. This represents a huge 13% increase above the alarming levels recorded last year.
However, the high number of pedestrian accidents is not due to the government’s failure to address it. The California Department of Transportation is expanding roundabouts, while the Office of Traffic Safety is funding pedestrian assessments in cities with high collision rates. Over the last three years, funding for pedestrian safety education has increased by 40%.
When motorists fail to yield to pedestrians or brake too abruptly, pedestrian deaths and injuries can occur. If you intend to take legal action, you should speak with competent legal counsel.
