Car Accident Statistics

The United States has one of the highest rates of traffic-related fatalities per million people in the world. The traffic fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) reached its peak in 2016 but gradually decreased to 1.11 deaths per 100 million VMT by 2019, showing some improvement in road safety.

However, this downward trend reversed in 2020, when traffic fatalities surged to the highest level since 2016. This spike was largely linked to the country reopening after COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, with most states partially reopened by June 2020, leading to an increase in deaths compared to the previous year. The majority of these fatalities involved vehicle occupants, while motorcyclists continued to account for a notable share of traffic deaths.

When it comes to non-fatal crashes, drivers and passengers of vehicles consistently make up the largest portion of injuries. This pattern reflects the widespread use of cars and light trucks, which are far more common than other modes of transportation, such as motorcycles or bicycles.

Between 2015 and 2016, the total number of injuries from motor vehicle crashes rose sharply. The numbers then declined in 2017 and remained relatively stable through 2019. Despite these fluctuations, the trend of mass motorization in the U.S. continues to make traffic-related injuries a significant public safety issue.
