Train Accident Statistics

Accidents involving motor vehicles are the leading cause of injury and death in urban areas, accounting for a disproportionately high percentage. This mode of transportation is not always the option that will save you the most time or money when deciding how to get around.

Train derailments are a common occurrence in a lot of different parts of the country. According to estimates provided by the Department of Transportation of the United States of America, there are approximately 5,800 accidents involving train cars that take place annually in the country.

The vast majority can be found at crossroads also served by railroads. As a direct consequence of these events, over 600 people lost their lives, and over 2,300 others were injured.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) reports inadequate warning signs at approximately eighty percent of the railroad crossings in the United States.

Most train accidents occur either because a train derailment occurs, the tracks are not properly maintained, or there are not enough safety regulations in place.
