Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Fatal two-vehicle collisions are a serious problem on America’s roads. In 2013, there were 32,719 people killed in crashes involving two vehicles. That is, almost 90 people are killed each day in crashes that involve two vehicles.
The statistics for fatal two-vehicle collisions are sobering. In 2013, head-on collisions accounted for 9% of all deadly crashes but resulted in more than a third of all traffic fatalities. Rear-end collisions accounted for 27% of all fatal crashes and resulted in almost half of all traffic fatalities.
There are many ways to prevent fatal two-vehicle collisions. The most crucial step is always to drive safely and defensively. Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to take evasive action if necessary.
If you are driving a vehicle, make sure that you keep your distance from the car in front of you. If you have to stop suddenly, you will want enough room to do so safely. Be especially careful when driving in bad weather or during high traffic periods.
Finally, never drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol. These substances can impair your judgment and slow your reaction time, making it difficult to avoid a collision.
