Head-on Collision Statistics
When two vehicles collide in opposing lanes, the front of one car hits the front of another, referred to as a head-on collision. Head-on collisions can result in fatalities and serious injuries that are frequently devastating.
According to the NHTSA, 145,000 head-on collisions in 2015 resulted in 785 deaths and 41,000 injuries. The NHTSA also reports that these types of crashes account for 3% but 8% of all fatal crashes.
In 2017, approximately 136,000 head-on collisions were reported across the United States. NHTSA estimates that nearly 10,000 people died in these crashes between 2005 and 2007 alone.
The reason for these high numbers is simple: drivers often fail to see an oncoming vehicle in their lane or misjudge how far away it is. Drivers are also commonly distracted while driving—texting, eating, etc.—and this increases the chances they will not see an oncoming car or misjudge its distance.
Drivers need to be aware of the dangers associated with head-on collisions so they can take steps to prevent them from happening.
