Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Accidents involving pedestrians differ from other accidents because pedestrians have no protection in the event of a crash. People who ride in cars are in vehicles that weigh an average of at least 4,000 pounds and have both seat belts and airbags to protect them. Even people who ride bikes usually wear helmets to protect their heads. Pedestrians, on the other hand, are completely defenseless and vulnerable if someone else is careless, which is how most pedestrian accidents happen.
Accidents involving pedestrians often cause serious injuries or even death to those unlucky enough to be in them. Pedestrian accidents often cause head injuries like concussions or brain bleeds, as well as traumatic brain injuries and many other painful injuries. Many injuries to pedestrians who are in accidents can cause either short-term or long-term problems.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 5,900 pedestrians were killed in the whole country in 2016. Accidents involving pedestrians are more likely to result in death than other accidents because pedestrians are not protected. For example, in a crash between two cars, both drivers are protected by seatbelts, airbags, and a multi-ton vehicle.
