Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

United States highways are notorious for being some of the most congested in the world. About 280 million cars and trucks are on the road in the United States, and approximately 227.5 million people use those cars and trucks daily.

Annually, there are at least six million collisions involving motor vehicles in the United States. Nearly 38,000 lives are lost each year in the United States due to road accidents, making them the leading cause of death in the country.

To illustrate this point, let’s think about a multi-car collision. A “multi-vehicle collision” is a head-on collision involving three or more vehicles. A chain reaction occurs when three or more vehicles collide on the road.

Multiple-vehicle accidents involving passenger cars accounted for more than 13,000 deaths in a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 40% of all accidents involve one of these automobiles.
