Motorcycle Accident Statistics
The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation recorded 5,014 motorcycle-related fatalities in 2016. A rise started in 1998 and continued through 2008, reversing a decline that had been in place since the early 1980s.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that motorcycle riders have a startling 16 times higher risk of injury and a shocking 35 times higher risk of death in a collision compared to car passengers.
Almost two-thirds of motorcycle accidents happen at intersections, and this is often because other vehicles don’t see the motorcycle. As a result of their size and maneuverability, motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in accidents than drivers of other vehicles.
A large majority of these routes can be found on the “Top 100 Motorcycle Roads in California” page of motorcycleroads.com. Registrations for motorcycles in this state are among the highest in the country. Nearly 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state over the past year.
It was estimated that 15,527 motorcyclists were injured and 541 were killed in 2017.
