Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of cyclists killed dropped by 3% this year, from 871 to 846. To put it another way, only 2% of traffic fatalities involve cars, while 80% involve bicycles.
Bicycles enjoy the same protections under California law as cars. The rules of the road that apply to motorists also apply to bicyclists. They are obligated to stop at red lights and ride in a straight line.
Many drivers are inconsiderate of cyclists and get dangerously close to them. As a result, there is a real chance of people getting hurt and maybe even dying.
As a whole, California has the highest rate of fatalities involving bicycles in the USA. Since there is a greater concentration of these modes of transportation in urban areas, it is not surprising that accidents involving them occur more frequently there. There were roughly 455 fatalities involving cyclists in California from 2016 to 2018.
