Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The rider of a motorcycle faces serious injury or death in the event of a collision with a car or truck. Accidental road rash, traumatic tattoos, and even brain injuries are just a few of the risks that motorcyclists face every day.

According to data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, 5,014 people were killed on motorcycles in 2016. The decline that had persisted since the 1980s was reversed beginning in 1998 and continuing through 2008.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle riders face an astounding 16 times higher risk of injury and a shocking 35 times higher risk of death in a collision compared to car passengers.

Almost two-thirds of motorcycle collisions occur at intersections, and this is often due to other drivers failing to see the motorcycle. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to being involved in accidents than drivers of other vehicles due to their smaller size and greater ability to maneuver.

The majority of these rides can be located on motorcycleroads.com’s “Top 100 Motorcycle Roads in California” page. The number of motorcycle registrations in this state is high compared to the rest of the country. In the past year, nearly 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state. According to statistics, 541 motorcyclists were killed, and 15,527 were injured in 2017.

The risk of serious head trauma can be reduced by wearing a helmet. Riders who protect their heads with helmets reduce their risk of fatal injury 37% of the time. After all, it’s possible that the rest of their bodies are still vulnerable.
