One person is dead, and another has been taken into custody after a DUI rollover collision in Stanislaus County late Sunday night, October 16, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol Modesto officers, the crash occurred around 9:58 p.m. on Northbound Interstate 5 close to the Westley Rest Area in Vernalis.
Officers say that when they arrived to conduct their investigation, they discovered a car traveling at about 75 MPH just south of Khalsa Road heading north on the I-5.
According to police, the car’s driver swerved to the left for an unknown reason, sending the vehicle off the road and into the dirt median.
The rear right-side passenger was thrown out of the vehicle and onto the dirt median when the driver lost control of the car and overturned.
The ejected passenger was confirmed dead at the scene.
According to the authorities, the ejected passenger was not using a seatbelt.
Although the driver and another passenger were only slightly hurt, they both declined to be taken to the hospital.
According to police, the car’s driver was later detained for DUI.
Fatal DUI Accident Statistics
Every person has the right to use the roads without fear of physical harm. Everyone’s safety on the road is at risk when drunk drivers are behind the wheel. Drunk driving is illegal in every state due to strict legislation.
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a surefire way to lose all sense of responsibility. The safety of the road is compromised when an intoxicated driver takes the wheel.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that approximately 10,000 people die per year as a direct result of being involved in a car accident with a drunk driver. About one-fifth, or 18 percent, of all fatal car accidents, involve impairment from drugs or alcohol.
More than 2,000 people lose their lives, and 30,000 more are injured due to drunk driving accidents each year in California. Both driving under the influence (DUI) and driving while intoxicated (DWI) have age and vehicle requirements set by the state.
Drivers with impairments often have difficulty with all three of these areas: vision, decision-making, and reaction time. Drunk drivers pose an especially high risk to other motorists and pedestrians on California’s most dangerous highways and roadways because of their impaired senses and mental state.
