Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rigs are the massive tractor-trailers and semis that can frequently be seen on American roads. Either term can be used to describe trucks in the business world.

The fatality rate in tractor-trailer accidents is much higher than in other types of car accidents. Trucks, buses, and other large commercial vehicles are major factors in this issue. Towing a heavy load requires more stopping room for a semitrailer.

Every 15 minutes, a person is killed in the United States because of a truck-related accident. Around 5,000 U.S. truck drivers are among the nearly half a million people who lose their lives in transportation-related accidents each year.

About 113 people per year lose their lives, and nearly 3,000 are injured because of truck accidents in California. About two hundred and thirty people per year in California are killed in accidents involving large trucks.

Deaths caused by accidents involving semi-trucks reached an all-time high between 2009 and 2015 when that data set was compiled. One out of every ten people killed on American roads was a passenger in a tractor-trailer collision in 2015.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suggests leaving at least 4 seconds of space when following a large truck going less than 40 miles per hour. Speeds in excess of forty miles per hour require an additional second.
