Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle crashes continue to pose a major safety issue across the United States. In 2021, there were about 5,932 motorcyclist deaths nationwide, and 565 of those occurred in California.

Nationally, motorcycle fatalities increased by 7.7 percent from 2020 to 2021, showing how dangerous riding can still be. Californiaโ€™s increase was smaller, about 2.9 percent, but it still highlights the ongoing need for safety programs and driver awareness.

Even though motorcycles make up only a small percentage of vehicles on the road, riders face a much higher risk of death in a crash compared to occupants of larger vehicles. Without the protection of an enclosed car, motorcyclists are more exposed to serious or fatal injuries. Wearing helmets, following traffic laws, and promoting road-sharing awareness are key ways to reduce the number of these tragic incidents.
