Pedestrian Accident Statistics

During the first half of 2024, an estimated 3,304 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. This represents a 2.6% decrease from the same period in 2023, or 88 fewer deaths. Despite this slight decline, pedestrian fatalities remain much higher than in previous years, with 1,072 more deaths than were recorded in 2014.

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) compiles these preliminary figures from January through June using data from State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs). According to research by Kyle Hickerson, Ph.D., at Westat, pedestrian deaths in early 2024 were 12% higher than in 2019 and 48% higher than in 2014. Over the past decade, pedestrian fatalities have increased nearly seven times faster than the 7% growth in the U.S. population.

These figures show that pedestrians continue to face significant risks nationwide and highlight the need for continued safety initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and public awareness efforts to help reduce crashes.
