[10-27-2024] Pedestrian and Motorcyclist Killed Following Highway Crash in Simi ValleyA pedestrian and a motorcyclist were killed in a crash on Highway 118 in Simi Valley early Sunday morning, October 27, 2024.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to reports of a collision around 6:05 a.m. on Highway 118, west of Rocky Peak Road.

Upon arrival, officers found an unoccupied Nissan Altima in the center median and discovered a 33-year-old woman from Canoga Park and a 54-year-old man from Simi Valley lying in the highway lanes, both deceased. Their identities are being withheld pending family notification.

Preliminary investigations suggest the woman crashed her Altima into the right-side guardrail, spinning across all westbound lanes of Highway 118 until she collided with the center median wall. After exiting her vehicle, she stood in the first lane, where she was struck by the motorcyclist, a 2020 Triumph Thruxton. The impact was so severe that it ejected the motorcyclist from his bike.

Both victims, along with the motorcycle, were found sprawled across the roadway, west of the crash scene. No arrests have been made, and the involvement of drugs or alcohol remains unknown.

The CHP Moorpark Area Office is investigating the crash.

Whether you are the injured party or a family member of a deceased victim, here’s what you should do following an accident:

  1. Stay Calm – Remain at the scene and check everyone’s condition. First, check yourself for injuries, then others. Stay composed and try to regain your calm.

Vehicle Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2022, an estimated 42,795 people lost their lives in motor vehicle traffic crashes, reflecting a slight decrease of about 0.3% from the 42,939 fatalities recorded in 2021. The fatality rate also saw a decline, estimated at 1.35 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in 2022, down from 1.37 per 100 million VMT in 2021. With pandemic-related restrictions easing, Americans have been driving more frequently, contributing to an increase in miles traveled, which rose nearly 1% over 2021 levels.

Despite this increase in travel, traffic fatality data for the fourth quarter of 2022 indicated a promising downward trend. This quarterly decline was the third consecutive decrease, following seven quarters of rising fatalities that began in the third quarter of 2020. Contributing to these trends are efforts by local and national safety initiatives aimed at reducing preventable accidents, such as expanded road safety measures, public awareness campaigns, and updated vehicle safety technology.
