Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
A pedestrian struck by a car almost always suffers severe or fatal injuries. Most people who die in a car crash in a crowded area are pedestrians.
The number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries in the United States has been rising steadily in recent years, and the severity of these incidents has also grown. The recent increase in pedestrian fatalities is very concerning.
According to a study by the Governors Highway Safety Association, while the overall number of traffic fatalities decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% during that same period (GHSA).
There were 5,977 pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2016. From late 2016 estimates, we can deduce that 88 people die every minute.
There were about 137,000 patients treated in emergency rooms in 2017 due to foot injuries. Pedestrians in California are more likely to be seriously hurt or killed than in any other state. California saw 893 pedestrian deaths and over 14,000 injuries in 2012.
Deaths and injuries to pedestrians are tragic outcomes of drivers failing to see or stop too harshly. A better chance of winning your case exists if you hire legal representation.
